Changing Lives Through Jesus

Faith Mission transforms the lives of Papua New Guineans living in remote areas through access to Christian education & teachings.

Working out of our three Faith Stations in Gouno, Lufa & Hairo, we also help provide funding for new school & administration buildings, help provide nutritional meals, ministry camp programs, general primary education, and help provide for vulnerable children and orphans. We also run the Faith Mission Bible College that administers Certificates in Descipleship, giving the opportunity for young Papua New Guineans to pursue a career in ministry.

We are grateful to all our sponsors, missionaries and pastors who give generously and volunteer their time and skills. Together, we can continue to empower people living in remote Papua New Guinea to change their lives and shape their futures through Christ.

History of Faith Mission

Faith Mission was established in 1953 by Reverend Ben Wertz.  Rev. Wertz first discovered God after being wounded (nearly fatally) during during Word War II. The promises of the Psalms helped him to survive the ordeal.

Upon discharge,  Rev. Wertz maintained his faith and moved back to the US, where he went into business and bought a house. While painting the house, he was shown a vision by God of a village in the Papua New Guinean jungle called “Gono“.

Understanding this to mean he should travel to PNG and become a missionary, Rev. Wertz moved his family to San Francisco where he took up a new job and Bible College studies. Rev. Wertz left for PNG on 25″ of December 1952, accompanied by his wife Tilila and daughter Ruth. The only funds he had were $3000USD from the sale of his car and some personal effects.

He arrived in Lae, Papua New Guinea, in 1953 and began searching for “Gono.” Rev. Wertz decided on the name “FAITH MISSION” for his ministry, as everything they did was done in faith. “Reaching the unreached for Christ” was his motto. A quote from ISAIAH 52:7How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news” was his theme.

At last he reached the place he envisioned called “Gono” and started establishing the mission station on the site.

Establishment in PNG

A lot of effort went into developing a place where the Gospel could be shared freely. Cars, motorbikes, sawmills, concrete, livestock and building materials were all packed up and carried or driven up here.

A second mission station was built in Lufa District, established under his supervision. They are now three Faith Mission Stations; Gouno Faith Mission station was the first; then Lufa (Red Top) Faith Mission Station and Hairo Faith Mission Station.

In 1987, the National Church, “Faith Fellowship Church” (FFC) was birthed. Since that year (1987), FFC has been run under PNG nationals.

Faith Mission continues to embrace and uphold the great legacy of our Founding father Rev. Ben Wertz as we keep on Reaching The Unreached For Christ.

Faith Mission endeavours to train, educate and empower church leaders, pastors and future trainers. Maintenance of infrastructure, building and repairs is a constant need.

We welcome volunteers, missionaries training pastors, leaders and students. Faith Mission PNG is completely reliant on prayer partners, donations and volunteer workers to meet the needs of our beloved communities.

Early Bible Teaching

Rev. Wertz had the challenge of teaching the Old and new Testaments to the unreached. He was able to use visual props and paintings to illustrate the Bible.

Soon, some of these wonderful posters from the 1950’s will be restored and available to view here on this page!
